Artwork Size Guide
What size artwork works best in the spaces in your home or workplace? Here are my size and location tips to get the most out of your new artwork.
Statement Pieces
A statement piece is one large painting or print that make your big blank wall look complete without overcomplicating your decor. Think over a bed, a mantle, or couch. They can also be hung alone on a large blank wall with nothing below.
Places for Statement Pieces
Above the bed
Above the mantle
Above the sofa or on a big, blank wall
Pro Tip
Take some blue or green masking tape (painter's tape) and tape out on your wall the outline of the size of art you are considering. Step back and you can imagine what the painting will look like in that spot.
Diptychs and Triptychs
Diptychs and Triptychs are meant to be hung together in a set of two or three. They are painted as a continuous scene that spans across multiple canvases.
Duos and Trios
You can also choose to hang multiple paintings next to each other that are not an official diptych or triptych, but have similar colors and look good together.
Paintings that work well side-by-side are usually the same size and are both vertical in orientation or square.
Places for Diptychs/Triptychs or Duos/Trios
In a hallway
In the dining room
Above a large bed or couch.
Small Paintings
Small paintings are for the little areas in your house or office that could use a little color or point of interest. They can make a dull or awkward area look attractive.
Places for Small Paintings
Entryway or hallway
Above a bedside table
Reading or breakfast nook
Gallery Wall
You do not have to be intimidated by a gallery wall. You can do it! It does not have to be symmetrical. In fact, not totally balanced is good.
Just make sure the artwork is evenly spaced apart and more or less have the smaller pieces around the edge and the larger pieces in the middle.
