Artist Notes: Poison Oak. Everyone hates it. Everyone avoids it. Everyone talks about it behind its back. You spot it on the trail and instantly look the other way. It never gets invited to backyard parties or tucked into flower arrangements. Ugh—just the worst, right?
But… is it really?
Hear me out. As long as you don’t touch it, poison oak is actually kind of amazing. It’s an expert at adapting—its leaves grow broad and flat like coasters in the shade, or small and curled like thumbnails in the sun. It can creep low around your ankles or climb thirty feet up a tree, depending on where it lives. It shelters birds and small animals, and when fall arrives, it puts on one of the most beautiful color displays in the forest—flashing yellows, oranges, greens, reds, and even pinks.
This patch here was glowing—a brilliant yellow against the pink rocks and green reflections in the water. I couldn’t resist the color combinations. I had to paint it. Looking at it while painting for so long, I had time to think about how cool it really is. If you just don’t touch it (and keep your dog out of it) it really is a beautiful plant.

As I was moving away from San Francisco, I wanted to capture the beauty of the view from my hilltop flat. I'd fallen in love with Liana's work when I'd seen it years earlier, and I knew she was who I wanted to bring that vision to life. Luckily for me she said yes. It was in the height of the pandemic so we did a video call, and I gave her the tour and shared some pictures. She turned that into a beautiful reincarnation of that gorgeous vista that I can now look at every day, even though I've moved thousands of miles away. Every time I look at that painting I really feel like I'm back home in my apartment in the trees.

One is a small painting that offers a much sought after anchor point for resetting in my office to clear my mind from the chaos and stress of work with texture, color and richness. The second is a gorgeous print above my bed that provides engaging and calming colors and reminds me of the landscapes I grew up around in Marin. Liana's art effortlessly captures the color, beauty, and calm of the northern California coast and hills. I've admired and followed her work for a long time, and now proudly hang two of her pieces in my home. They have become some of my most loved possessions.
